The Test

The Test by Sylvain Neuvel is a dystopian sci-fi novella that functions as a dark, psychological examination of state bureaucracy, immigration, and human morality.

The Premise

The story is set in a near-future United Kingdom, where the government has implemented the rigorous British Values Assessment (BVA). Only male immigrants between the ages of 16 and 45 are required to sit for this 25-question multiple-choice test. The stakes are absolute: passing grants citizenship to the applicant’s entire family, while failing results in immediate deportation.

The protagonist, Idir Jalil, is an Iranian dentist who fled Tehran to protect his family after his journalist wife was targeted and tortured by the regime. Idir enters the London testing facility optimistic, eager to prove his worth and secure a safe future for his wife and two children.

The Twist

A few minutes into the exam, the narrative takes a sudden, violent turn. Armed terrorists storm the building, taking the applicants and staff hostage. When an unruly captive is shot, Idir’s natural instinct as a healthcare provider kicks in, and he steps forward to administer medical aid.

This act of compassion marks him. The leader of the terrorists forces Idir into a series of horrific, impossible dilemmas, handing him the power of life and death by forcing him to choose which of his fellow hostages will live and which will die. As the tension escalates, Idir realizes his own family is in danger, and he may soon be forced to choose between the lives of his own wife and children.
