Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman is a fast-paced, darkly comedic LitRPG (Literary Role-Playing Game) novel that kicks off an incredibly popular apocalyptic survival series. It blends high-stakes action, absurd humor, and a critique of corporate greed and reality television.
The story begins on a freezing night when alien syndicates suddenly flatten every building on Earth. In an instant, billions of people are killed. The planet is transformed into a massive, 18-level underground dungeon run by the Galactic Borant Corporation. Humanity’s remaining survivors are given a choice: enter the dungeon within a tight time limit to compete in a deadly, televised game show for the entertainment of the galaxy, or freeze to death on the surface.
Carl, an ordinary guy, manages to survive the initial collapse because he stepped outside in the middle of the night to chase after his ex-girlfriend’s prize-winning, award-winning Persian show cat, Princess Donut. Because of the rush, Carl enters the dungeon wearing nothing but boxer shorts, a leather jacket, and no shoes.
Once inside, the universe operates under strict RPG mechanics. Carl and Princess Donut become “crawlers.” They must fight monsters, disarm traps, find loot, and level up to survive. Early on, Carl finds a rare pet box and uses it on Donut, which elevates her to human-level intelligence and grants her the ability to speak and cast magic. While Carl relies on his brawling instincts, high explosives, and tactical smarts, Donut becomes a highly capable, sassy magic-caster.
The entire dungeon crawl is broadcast across the universe as a massive reality TV show, complete with viewers sending in corporate sponsorships, an AI dungeon master that is increasingly unhinged and obsessed with Carl’s bare feet, and fans who vote on live events.
