I, Medusa

The story follows 17-year-old Medusa, nicknamed “Meddy,” who lives on a secluded island. Unlike her immortal parents (the minor sea deities Phorcys and Ceto) and her sisters, Meddy is mortal and feels like an outsider. Yearning for adventure and a purpose beyond her family’s expectations, she leaps at the chance to leave the island when the goddess Athena invites her to Athens to train as a high priestess.

In Athens, Meddy thrives as Athena’s favored acolyte, though she faces bullying and xenophobia from other acolytes due to her foreign status and her distinct locs. Her life is upended when the sea god Poseidon notices her. Meddy is initially drawn to him, but a drunken celebration ends in violence when Poseidon sexually assaults her, violating her sacred vows of chastity to the temple.

Rather than punishing Poseidon, an enraged Athena blames Meddy for the broken oath. Athena transforms Meddy’s beautiful locs into venomous snakes and curses her with a petrifying gaze, turning her into the Gorgon of legend. Forced into exile, Meddy refuses to remain a passive victim. Instead, she chooses to embrace her new identity, transforming from a survivor into an avenging vigilante determined to write her own history.
